Senator Presses Elon Musk Over Starlink For Ukraine … Elon Pushes Back
With global tensions ratcheting up, his reason for refusal is worth thinking about
With Russia the aggressor and Ukraine the defender in this conflict, it’s easy to default into good-guy-bad-guy thinking.
But anyone who remembers the trigger points for WWII will remember that the conditions under which a war ends can be just as important as what started it in the first place. Otherwise, you might end up in a worse place than where you started.
Hitler might never have had broad public support for his European aggression had the Treaty of Versailles not extracted such a high price from the losing side.
Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?
That kind of historical context is often forgotten in the excitement of throwing your support behind The Current Thing™, as we can see with Senator Scott Kelly.
Elon was not taking the bait.
He’s trying to thread a very difficult needle.
No amount of goading calling him Putin’s Puppet is going to cow him into blind obedience. It’s his tech, and he sets the rules.
If his own tech were to escalate this situation in a way that caused it to spin out of control, those consequences would weigh heavily on his conscience.
If only more of our politicians showed that same level of hesitation before escalation.
