FLASHBACK: Here’s How Obama’s DHS Chief Defined ‘Border Crisis’ In 2019 (VIDEO)
Those 'Crisis' numbers would be a welcome relief compared to what we're seeing now
The establishment asserts that there is no crisis on the border, or that any crisis that may exist is purely a function of Trump’s policies, making it difficult to receive large numbers of people rather than flow of people itself.
Objections to either point are routinely dismissed as right-wing partisan talking points sniping at Biden for political gain.
Let’s look at this same issue from a whole other direction. Left-leaning site. Obama-era DHS chief. Republican in office.
What we have here is Jeh Johnson sitting down on “Morning Joe’ for a TV spot recorded in March of 2019.
Note this interview took place on MSNBC, not some right-wing site that Biden backers would dismiss as ‘ULTRA-MAGA’. The bottom corner even advertises a ‘special event’ featuring AOC and her Green New Deal.
Jeh Johnson was Obama’s guy, so nobody could accuse him of embracing the agenda of ‘Orange Man Bad’.
One paragraph from this old clip frames today’s border situation in a light unlike that of any Biden appointee overseeing this crisis:
“When I was in office in Kirstjen Nielsen’s job, at her desk, I’d get to work around 6:30 in the morning and there’d be my intelligence book sitting on my desk, the PDB, and also the apprehension numbers from the day before,” Johnson said. “And I’d look at them every morning, it’d be the first thing I’d look at. And I probably got too close to the problem, and my staff will tell you if it was under 1,000 apprehensions the day before that was a relatively good number, and if it was above 1,000 it was a relatively bad number, and I was gonna be in a bad mood the whole day.”
We’ve been consistently averaging 10 TIMES Jeh Johnson’s ‘bad mood’ number… and those numbers will only go higher.
Faraway cities are already buckling under the strain of accommodating new arrivals… how much worse is it for the border communities — or the would-be migrants themselves?
If anyone is looking for a ‘root cause’, they may want to revisit this pivitol moment in the Democratic primaries. Can anyone still remember the context of the question these candidates were responding to?
Because people packing caravans had a very clear idea of what that meant.
The border can only be a ‘failed’ policy if the desired objective and the actual results are at odds with each other.
It’s pretty clear that somebody got exactly the result they wanted here. Their own leaked memo from 2018 pretty much spells out the direct connection between this policy and their future electoral hopes.
The question that needs answering is — who is driving this policy and what are they hoping to accomplish with it?
